Understanding Violent Extremism in the Sahel

In celebration of the launch of their new European Headquarters in The Hague, International Alert will host a panel discussion on Understanding Violent Extremism in the Sahel. 

Birgitta Tazelaar, Deputy Director General for International Cooperation for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), will deliver an opening address on current priorities and challenges for peacebuilding and international development.

This will be followed by a panel discussion to understand the rise of violent extremism in the central Sahel. We will hear from peacebuilders and civil society experts to understand the rise of violent extremism in the central Sahel and the main factors behind some young people’s decision to join armed groups and how this can be prevented. The floor will then be opened for questions from the audience.

  • Hans Bolscher, Former Director at the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Economic Affairs, Netherlands (chair)
  • Boukary Sangare, Renowned anthropologist on Central Mali
  • Marco Simonetti, West Africa Regional Manager, International Alert

The discussion will be followed by a drinks reception which will finish at 18:30. The event is free to attend.
