Strategic Communication & Countering Violent Extremism: The value of an integrated approach

Organized by:Secretariat of the Knowledge Platform Security & Rule of Law

On 12 January, the Knowledge Platform Security & Rule of Law and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will host a half-day seminar as part of the Terugkomdagen Regional Security Coordinators entitled "Strategic Communication & Countering Violent Extremism: The value of an integrated approach".

The seminar aims to bridge connections among Dutch military and civilian actors that use strategic communication, in various forms and fields, to counter violent extremism.

Countering violent extremism (CVE) has become an increasingly prominent focus of Dutch international security policy and its contributions to missions abroad. Over the past decade and a half, conflicts have been increasingly asymmetric, effectively expanding the ‘battlefield’. Strategies must be developed not only for the control of physical territory in Libya and Iraq, but also for the public narrative on Twitter and Facebook.  In this way, strategic communication has been recognized on many levels, and across many contexts, as an effective tool to counter violent extremism.

This seminar seeks to initiate networking among regional security coordinators, NGO practitioners, domestic security providers, and civilians seconded abroad – especially those part of the Dutch contribution to the Anti-ISIL mission. To catalyze these important connections, the seminar will seek to provide a common understanding of “Strategic Communication” and the role it can play (in various contexts) in reducing the credibility, influence and allure of extremist campaigns and recruitment.

This event is by invitation only.
