Join our Panel Discussion on the challenges of rapid urbanization in fragile states for peacebuilding and statebuilding, as well as opportunities afforded to local governments in cities.  The program will spark an open and informal debate with ample opportunity for interactive dialogue with a panel comprising - among others - the Mayor of Kabul, Gjakova and former Mayor of Kigali.

The following questions will be central to the dialogue session:
  • How can empowered cities, operating within a multi-level governance framework, help create a more effective response to preventing and mitigating violent conflict?
  • What role can mayors and local governments play in strengthening the relationship between civil society and the state during processes of peacebuilding and statebuilding?
  • How can international cooperation support effective local governance that contributes to national development outcomes?
  • How can the Sustainable Development Goals effectively address the challenges and opportunities that arise from urbanization in fragile and conflict-affected states?
