To deepen our understanding of the correlation between private sector development, job creation  and peace, the Working Group Employment for Stability is pleased to organize this event. This event is the kick off a closed three days training course “Private Sector Development for Employment and Stability” developed by Dr. Peter Davis and the Donor Committee for Enterprise Development.

Nowadays much debate revolves around employment creation in Fragile and Conflict Affected States (FCAS) as a priority to prevent these environments of (re-)lapsing in violent conflict. Indeed, self-employment and wage-employment can play a pivotal role in generating the much needed peace dividend to rebuild functioning societies: not only by providing people with an income and a sense of belonging to society, but also by restoring trust within the social fabric and creating an enlarged tax base, provided that these jobs are created in the formal sector, which in turn can contribute to (re-) building state legitimacy.

Taking into account that nine out of ten jobs are created by the private sector, much of the success or failure to foster lasting peace in those fragile economies will depend on the ability to promote sustainable private sector development in those contexts.
