Counter-Terror and ‘Countering Violent Extremism’: What Do They Mean for Peace and Security?

Organized by:ICCT and Knowledge Platform Security & Rule of Law

Saferworld’s research has focused on current counter-terrorism, countering violent extremism and stabilisation approaches, and examines strategic and practical options for improving them, outlined in the think piece ‘Should YOU be Countering Violent Extremism?’. Their latest work looks at counter-terror and CVE efforts in Tunisia and two counties in Kenya – Lamu and Garissa, building on previous case studies from Afghanistan, Somalia and Yemen.

The challenges posed by both conflict and terror attacks, at home and abroad, and the political pressure to respond effectively, are intensifying. The right way to do so has been hotly debated within peace and security circles. This meeting, during which Saferworld will present research and lessons from recent research in Kenya and Tunisia, aims to contribute to the debate with a view to promoting peace and mitigating risks to long-term stability.

Objectives

The meeting will analyse current counter-terrorism, countering violent extremism and stabilisation approaches, and present strategic and practical options for improving them. It will then promote an informed debate on this complicated topic, and identify lessons for pursuing constructive approaches to CT and CVE.
