Call for Panels | Indonesia Netherlands Legal Update

Van Vollenhove Institute, Leiden Law School
Indonesia

On 20-21 November 2014 the Working Group Indonesia of the Dutch Knowledge Platform Security & Rule of Law organises the first Indonesia Netherlands Legal Update in The Hague. The Update will bring together a selected number of Indonesian and Dutch researchers, practitioners and policymakers interested in legal cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands. It will offer a platform for discussion of important legal developments in both Indonesia and the Netherlands. This will help strengthen the current and future bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands in the fields of security and rule of law, as well as assist in identifying priorities for future legal cooperation and/or applied research. The Update shall give special attention to, but is not limited to, developments related to ‘Access to Justice’, ‘Legal Education’ and ‘Institutional Reform’.

For many years Indonesian and Dutch legal institutions institutes, researchers and practitioners have collaborated in programmes of research, technical assistance and bilateral exchange concerning Indonesia’s legal system. These programmes have contributed to rule of law promotion and capacity development, as well as generated important insights into the functioning of Indonesia’s legal system. The Update seeks to build on this foundation and further expand and deepen the cooperation.

Panels

The Working Group Indonesia invites scholars, policy makers, and legal practitioners to contribute to the Update in the form of a panel. We welcome you to create and organise your own panel. Each panel should focus on a theme relevant to the Indonesia-Netherlands legal cooperation. Topics suggested during a preliminary workshop in Jakarta last June include institutional reform of the judiciary, the role of guardian institutions, curricula reform and capacity development of Law Schools, legal empowerment, land conflicts, impunity, asset recovery, security cooperation and civil law trends. This list is not exhaustive, but may serve as a guideline.

A panel must consist of at least two presentations (with preferably one Indonesian and one Dutch or international presenter) and a group discussion. For each panel we have scheduled 2,5 hours including a short break. There will be space for eight panels in total during two parallel sessions. Panels should be of interest to a mixed audience of practitioners, policy makers and researchers and offer various perspectives on the subject matter.

The Working Group can cover the costs of participation (one return ticket economy, accommodation) for at least one Indonesian participant in each panel. Furthermore, if a paper needs to be drafted there are limited funds available for a fee for the Indonesian author/ contributor.

Information to be included in your proposal

Your panel proposal should consist of no more than 600 words. Please include the names and affiliations of the proposed presenters, subjects of the presentations and specify why your proposed theme is relevant to the Indonesia-Netherlands legal cooperation. If you are to present a paper, please describe (in an additional 400 words) the outline of the paper, and include a CV of the author(s). Please provide your name and institution and contact information, including e‐mail and telephone number.

Deadline:

Please submit your proposal before 16 September 2014 12:00 hrs. CET to Mr. Dennis Janssen: (vollenhoven@law.leidenuniv.nl). You will be notified by e‐mail whether your panel has been accepted by 23 September 2014.
